Perry is the child of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). The role of Jackie Harris was played by her mother in both her two appearances on Roseanne. She was not allowed to begin acting in front of her family until she reached an adulthood stage, because they were concerned about the stress it would create. Perry admitted that she wasn't confident in her acting during high school. However, she began performing as a means to connect with new people during her time at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry was able to land small TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent after she graduated. The feeling of homelessness, however, caused her to move back to California and she returned working in the stage. Perry was a part of the cast with her mother on stage in The Other Place at Broadway, back in 2013. In 2015, she performed with her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry played nine roles in the ABC film The Family, in 2016. Perry was a regular character in the ABC drama about politics Scandal, starring her dad. She was also cast in The CBS show The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger than Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mom. The role was offered to her through an open audition despite having a connection to this persona.
